In summer 2012, Portland and Tweetminster conducted a study into the use of Twitter in the Middle East.
Using the data collected, Portland mapped the 500 most connected Twitter users in the Middle East and tracked their conversations. Portland has thus created a comprehensive map of the most connected tweeters and countries.
Here is a presentation of their findings. It’s interesting to note that of the top 50 tweeters in MENA, 38% are commentators, 36% are journalists, and 18% are politicians or government officials. Though women are becoming more active on Twitter, men still hold the majority of the top 50 spots. In the Arab world, 78% of the top tweeters in MENA, mainly use Twitter to discuss Politics.
