What are Saudi consumers hungry for? A look at search trends in the Kingdom [Infographic]
The online ordering sector is heating up this year with Foodonclick, the Arab arm of Turkish online delivery giant Yemeksepeti, announcing expansion into Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, and Rocket Internet’s HelloFood's announcement of US $8 million in investment through iMENA for expansion beyond Saudi, Morocco and Jordan.
Within this regional setting, Jeeran, the popular Amman-based location review platform, just released its first infographic, sharing insights on the search behavior of consumers in Saudi Arabia.
With over a million Saudi users per month on Jeeran, reading reviews, finding local businesses and making spending decisions, the infographic reveals that Saudi consumers, by a wide margin, search "restaurants" more than anything else on Jeeran. Next in line, consumers search for “sweets”, followed by “pizza” and “Burger King”.
These consumers are most hungry at night; consumers search for places to order from at around 8pm and most food orders in Saudi take place around 10pm. When searching, most consumers (77%) look for a place that offers delivery, while 8% look for female-only locations. It looks like Saudi consumers love fast food in particular; 56% of restaurant searches are for fast food restaurants and 42% for local cuisine, followed by a shy 1% for “oriental” cuisine and 0.75% for Lebanese.
Jeeran also offers a glimpse at the districts in Riyadh with the highest number of listed “places” on its website: the Al-’Olayya district is the most crowded with 8,795 places followed by Al-Malaz with 5,221.
