SME Sector

  • SMEs account for nearly 73% of all private sector jobs, but contributes for just 28 per cent of total GDP.
  • Trading, wholesaling and retail account for 42 per cent of all SME activity.

 

Economy

  • Petroleum production and refining account for 60% of Bahrain’s export revenues, 70% of government revenues
  • Bahrain is fast becoming an important financial centre, particularly in Islamic banking. The financial services sector currently accounts for 22 per cent of GDP.

 

Society

  • Unlike many Gulf states, the majority – 63% – of Bahrain’s citizens are local.
  • The country’s unemployment rate stands at 15%, one of the highest in the GCC.
