SME sector
- The SME sector is responsible for around 75% of non-oil exports from Syria, nearly 20% of GDP.
- In 2009, the Government signed an agreement with the European Investment Bank to provide $100 million in funding for SMEs.
Economy
- Syria is about to complete the first of a ten-year program of economic modernization, beginning the establishment of a market economy.
- Trade with Arab states has multiplied fourfold since 2002, and now exceeds $US170 billion annually.
- Agriculture is still the backbone of the Syrian economy, contributing 17.6% of all GDP.
Society
- Syria has one of the youngest populations in the region, with 65% of all Syrians under the age of 25.
