Social Entrepreneurship

  1. What is “social venture”?

    There are many definitions of “social venture.” For the competition, a social venture is defined as a business that:
    • Has been specifically built and structured to tackle social and/or environmental problems
    • Is or plans to be financially sustainable or profitable
  2. What is “social impact”?

    Social impact can be defined as any non-financial benefits that a venture can create for society as a whole. Social impact can be assessed in a variety of areas from health and wellness to environment to talent development to social inclusion.

PepsiCo Involvement

  1. Why is PepsiCo organizing a social venture competition?

    PepsiCo is a strong advocate of social entrepreneurship and the power it has to drive sustainable development. As a company, PepsiCo champions social entrepreneurs, in line with its guiding corporate vision, Performance with Purpose, and its belief that financial success goes hand in hand with leaving a positive impact on society.

    PepsiCo firmly believes that socially innovative business models have a powerful influence on societies and on the economy, and are key to increasing employment and building a more sustainable future.

  2. What is AMWAJ forum?


    Under the patronage of HRH Prince Hassan of Jordan, AMWAJ (“waves” in Arabic) is an international forum about sustainability around the Mediterranean and Middle East. It brings together young professional journalists and entrepreneurs from the countries of the Union for the Mediterranean to share and explore innovative projects in the water, energy and technology sectors. The AMWAJ Summit’s ultimate goal is to create a water and energy community based on sharing natural resources for a more sustainable future. AMWAJ is an initiative by Revolve, a belgian-based communication agency accelerating the energy transition and fostering cultures of sustainability, in partnership with PepsiCo.

Eligibility

  1. Who is eligible to participate in the competition?

    Any venture fulfilling the eligibility criteria can participate in PepsiCo Social Impact Competition.
  2. Do I need to have an incorporated business before I can apply to the competition?

    Yes, to be able to apply, a venture should already be established and operational. PepsiCo Social Impact Competition is not an ideation nor a business plan competition.
  3. Are there restrictions related to the age and the nationality of participating team members?

    No, as long as the participating startups fulfill the eligibility criteria, there are no restrictions related to the age or the nationality of its team members.
  4. Is a venture still eligible if it has already received investment?

    Yes, a venture that has already received investment can still participate in PepsiCo Social Impact Competition.
  5. Is a venture still eligible if it has already won other competition(s)?

    Yes, a venture that has already won other competition(s) can still apply to PepsiCo Social Impact Competition.

Submission and Selection

  1. How can a venture apply to PepsiCo Social Impact Competition?

    To participate in PepsiCo Social Impact Competition, a venture should simply complete and submit the online application form.
  2. How ventures are going to be evaluated?

    Ventures will be assessed based on pre-defined and objective judging criteria.
  3. How many ventures will make it to the final round of judging?

    10 ventures will qualify to the competition’s final round taking place in Amman, Jordan at the AMWAJ forum.
  4. What are the requested deliverables from the finalists?

    Selected startups will be requested to prepare and submit a DIY video pitch and a presentation deck for the final round of the competition. They will be provided with the needed guidelines and support by Wamda.

Terms & Conditions

  1. PepsiCo Social Impact Competition is being run by Wamda, an independently operated and governed organization in partnership with PepsiCo.
  2. By applying, each applicant warrants that he/she is the original author of the submission and that the submission does not or will not infringe any third party's intellectual property and proprietary rights, including their copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, design or other proprietary rights or rights of publicity or privacy.
  3. Applicants should not be current employees of one of the organizing companies.
  4. All the information provided by the ventures during the competition will be treated as confidential and will only be viewed by judges and the organizers of PepsiCo Social Impact Competition. The materials of finalists, such as video pitches, may be used in promotional activities directly related to the competition.
  5. By entering the competition, participants agree to participate in promotional activity and material as PepsiCo and its partners may request. This includes but is not limited to the use of photographs, videos and testimonials.
  6. The organizers of the competition reserve the right to disqualify any teams that are found to have violated the spirit of the competition guidelines.
  7. A panel of social entrepreneurship experts will screen the received applications and will select the 10 finalists. All decisions made by this panel will be considered final.
  8. Finalists will win a trip for up to two people to compete in the final round of the competition in Amman. The covered expenses include the plane tickets and the hotel accommodation.
  9. A panel of judges will watch pitching startups, score participants, and select the winners of the competition. All decisions made by this panel will be considered final.
  10. The finalists and the winners of the competition will be posted on the event microsite and the winners will be announced during an award ceremony at the conclusion of the AMWAJ Summit.
  11. The submission deadline and the closing date are as specified in the competition, and organizers reserve the right to amend them at any time.
  12. The organizers reserve the right to amend these rules at any time and if they do so, they will post an update on the competition’s microsite and notify all participants.
