Moroccan Entrepreneurs Bring Social Media Day to MENA

On June 30th, Social Media Day in Casablanca, Morocco drew over 150 participants to the country’s tech capital to meet, greet, and debate the role of social media among the Moroccan society.

Ranked 2nd in terms of registered participants (268 registered), just after Social Media Day in San Diego, CA, Casablanca is the first city in the Middle East and North Africa African to celebrate this special day.

Organized by the Social Media Club Casablanca at the Mood Café, a venue that is becoming famous among local geeks and tweeps for welcoming events and meetups like the Foursquare Day (4sqDay), this meetup was the opportunity for all local social media users and lovers to meet in real life, brunch and share best practices and points of view.

Some panelists and speakers were here to debate about social media and entrepreneurship in Morocco, while it was also an opportunity for young entrepreneurs to present their new ideas of business and startups. One such entrepreneur was Youssef El Hammal,  the co-founder of Stagiaires.ma, a co-sponsor of the event, who presented his new niche job board dedicated to interns and internship in Morocco.

Apart from the excitement of encounter Twitter friends in real life and celebrating of these powerful tools for sharing and socialization, it is interesting to note that no discussion directly addressed the concept of privacy and personal data. We obviously all know that this is crucial in social networks, and it’s important to learn and teach users how to be safe, secure and social at the same time. As I discussed with Yasser Monkachi, it will certainly be an important topic for the future events organized by the Social Media Club Casablanca. Looking forward to it!
