MIT Media Lab Dubai: Redefining cities

In order to rebuild ancient cities and accommodate rapid population growth, we need to develop truly innovative approaches to urban planning, design, architecture, mobility, farming, and so much more: approaches that will last into the future.

    Monday August 29

    • Welcome speech and introductions

    • Group field trips based on tracks

      Track participants will go on customized field trips to collect data, insights, and inspiration for the workshop. Field trips include:

      A guided tour of the Aramex facilities, lead by Aramex Country Manager Hussein Wehbe.

      Discussion session and tour of the port at DP World, lead by the DP World team.

      Visit to the new communal, sustainable, and off-the-grid space built by Cultural Engineering, lead by Ahmed and Rashid Bin Shabib.

      Tour of AstroLabs with discussion session and meeting with community.

      Exploration of Deira, Bastakieh, and Palm Jumeirah.

      Exploration of Dubai Metro System.

    • Group dinner

    Tuesday August 30

    • Morning check in

    • Design, work, and facilitation from IDEO

      Tracks will synthesize learnings from field trips and brainstorm solutions to build. By the end of the day, tracks will have decided on their project and think of the design of their prototype. Ashley Shaffer and Nick Dupey from IDEO will facilitate the workshop.

    Wednesday August 31

    • Morning check in

    • Design, work, and facilitation from IDEO

      Tracks will continue working and iterating on their prototype.

    Thursday September 1

    • Morning check in

    • Projects and presentations are finalized

      Participants will put in final touches to their prototypes and prepare presentations for the conference on Friday.

    • Rehearsals

    Friday September 2

    • Conference with presentations and talks
